Tracking Information (Tracking URL and Custom Parameter)

According to the start of Advanced URL system, new URL items were enabled you to manage URLs and Tracking information separately.

[What is Tracking information?]
"Tracking" on Search Ads is to track user's click on your ad with Analysis tool by advertiser.
"Tracking information" means the required URL and parameter to be set on your ads for tracking.
By the former Search Ads URL system, a display URL on ad was different from the URL of page which displayed for user click in some cases on former Search Ads URL system, even with Tracking URL and parameter settings. And it required re-editing to add/revise tracking URL and parameter on ads, so there was a blank period in some cases.]

Advanced URL system provides the new items below to resolve issues and to enable the market fairness, also to decrease workload of advertising management on advertisers end.

Please click and see details of each items.

Available setting items vary with each component layer such as campaign, ad, etc. Click here to see more details on the description below.

  • Landing Page URL

Enter the URL of the page displayed when the ad user clicks on the ad, as “Landing Page URL”.
*This information can be enabled for ad, keyword and QuickLinks.  It is required item especially for ad and Quicklinks.

    Note
・When using Tracking URL, it is prioritized Tracking URL over Landing Page URL. Click here to see more detail.
・If you using Japanese URL setting for Display URL on your ad, our Editorial Review will process the information converted to Japanese URL from the URL in Punycode format.
・Our regulation for "Landing Page URL" is referable on the following Ad Insertion rule.
    1. Ad Insertion Rules(PC/Smartphone/Tablet-type Devices)

・On the Campaign Management Tool, multiple Landing Page URLs (or Smartphone Landing Page URL) cannot be set to a single ad.
  • Smartphone Landing Page URL
If the URL will differ between PC and smartphone access, enter the specific URL for smartphones in “Smartphone Landing Page URL”.
This information can be enabled for ad, keyword and QuickLinks. You don’t need to specify this URL if you don’t own the pages for Smartphone users, or your website is common both for PC/Tablet and Smartphone users.
    Note
・The domain of “Display URL” must match with the “Landing Page URL” or “Smartphone Landing Page URL”. So you need to create the page for PC and page for Smartphone on the same domain.
    [ex.]
URL of site displayed for PC user : "http://example.com/pc"
URL of site displayed for Smartphone user : "http://example.com/sp"
*Please note that if their domain does not match, consider the following  options.
    - Op.1) Create ads for PC and Smartphone separately.
    [ex.]
URL of site displayed for PC user : "http://example.com/"
URL of site displayed for Smartphone user : "http://example-sp.com/"
    - Op.2) Use Tracking Parameter "ifmobile"

・If you using Japanese URL setting for Display URL on your ad, our Editorial Review will process the information converted to Japanese URL from the URL in Punycode format.

    Tips
If you have Smartphone Landing Page URL only for user click on your ad, you need to enter the URL in the "Landing Page URL" field.
In this case, you don't need to enter information in the "Smartphone Landing Page URL" field.
  • Tracking URL
If an ad tracking tool is used to obtain data such as click information, enter the specific URL for the ad tracking within “Tracking URL” field. If you don’t use any tracking feature for your website, you don’t need to enable this URL.
This information is available for account, campaign, ad group, ad, keyword and QuickLinks.Up to 1024 byte (*Counting half-width character as 1 byte, and counting full-width character as 3 byte) are available, and Japanese URL also can be used.
To set Tracking URL on Account, Campaign, Ad Group, “{lpurl}” must be included in the Tracking URL. “{lpurl}” is not required for the component layers; Ad, Keyword, QuickLinks Option.
*“{lpurl}” is the parameter which your Landing Page URL is inserted to.  If you include “{lpurl}” on Tracking URL setting, the Landing Page URL will be inserted to the part of “{lpurl}” on the URL and the page with whole URL when internet user click on your ads.
    sample :
    Landing Page URL: "http://www.yahoo.co.jp/"
    Tracking URL: "http://rd.example.com/?lp={lpurl}"
URL when user click on your ads:
*Also note that the setting on the upper layer is valid for its lower component layers.
    example :
Setting Tracking URL for a campaign and another Tracking URL is set for ad under the campaign, the Tracking URL set for ad is valid.
    Note
・Tracking URL is not settable at the same time as creating Account. It’s settable from the editing screen after the Account creation.
・If the landing page will directly link from the ad clicked by users, “Tracking URL” will not be required to set.
・Tracking URL may be automatically converted to the URL for a proper ad delivery.
・For Mobile App Download ads (for Android OS only), the setting of Tracking URL on account component layer will not be effective. The setting of Landing Pave URL on the ad component level is only available.
・The setting of Tracking URL on account, campaign, ad group component layer will be effective for QuickLinks. However, if you have enable the Tracking URL especially for the QuickLink itself, the setting for QuickLink is effective in priority.
*The setting of the component layer (campaign or ad group) which the QuickLink is setup to, will not have impact.
・Tracking URL is prioritized over Landing Page URL.
When you enable the setting of Tracking URL on your ad, the setting is prioritized over the Landing Page URL for keywords when your ad is delivered to users. So if you need to display your ad to users with the URL set to keywords, you need to set Tracking URL on the keywords or disable the Tracking URL on ad.
Please also refer the following matrix to understand the rule.
    Setting: URL delivered on ad
Set Landing Page URL on Keyword Ad is displayed with Ad's Tracking URL
Set both of Tracking URL and Landing Page URL on Ad
Set both of Tracking URL and Landing Page URL on Keyword Displayed with Keyword's Tracking URL
Set Landing Page URL on Ad
  • Custom Parameter
For "Landing Page URL" and "Tracking URL", you are able to set this parameter with unique string as for an indicator of tracking purpose. Up to 3 parameters are available.
When you don't use tracking feature, this parameter is not required.
Custom Parameter is settable for campaign, ad group, ad, keyword and QuickLinks. The format to enter is as follows.
    Format: {_key}=value
-key: Enter name of the parameter
-value: Enter the value of the parameter. The value can be set with Japanese character.
*Note: You have to put "_"(single underscore symbol) before the "key"(name).
For "key", up to 16 bytes (half-width character only, counting a character as 1 byte), and up to 200 bytes (counting a half-width character as 1 byte, full-width character as 3 bytes) for "value" field.
*Also note that the setting on upper component layer is valid for the lower layer. If you set Custom Parameter on a campaign, the setting is valid for ad group, ad, keyword and QuickLinks under the campaign.
However if you enable Custom Parameter on any lower layer, it will be prioritized over the setting on upper layer.
    ex.:
When you enable Custom Parameter on Campaign and also for ad, the setting of Custom Parameter for ad will be prioritized over the one of campaign when the ad is displayed to user.
    Note
When you enable Custom Parameter setting for Campaign or Ad group, the setting will be applied to QuickLinks. However if you make setting Custom Parameter for the QuickLinks itself, the setting for the QuickLinks is prioritized over the other one.
*The setting of the component layer (campaign or ad group) which the QuickLink is setup to, will not have impact.
