First setting of conversion tracking for website

Conversion tracking is an analytic feature that tracks whether or not an internet user who clicks the customer’s ad completes an action (conversion) resulting in, for example, a product purchase on the customer’s website, site registration, content subscription, registration for magazine etc., and calculates the number and rate of conversions and the conversion value.

To track conversions on a website, a conversion tracking tag must be installed on the transaction completion page on the customer website. Once a tag is installed, conversions occur when the visitor reaches the transaction completion page.
Cookie information from the visitor’s browser is checked to see if the visitor clicked on an ad posted by the customer, and any log within the tracking period (from 7 to 90 days) will be counted as a valid conversion.
Tracking data such as the number of conversions can be verified in the Campaign Management Tool.

Setting of the Conversion tracking tag

The procedure for acquiring the conversion tracking tag and setting it on the transaction completion page (Order completion page, Registration completion page) is as follows.
The conversion tracking tag can be issued up to 1,000 per account.

  1. Click the tool icon in the upper right corner of the Display Ads management tool.
  2. Click “Conversion tracking” in the “Common library” column on the displayed menu.
  3. Click “Create New Conversion Tracking” on the “Conversion Tracking” screen.
  4. Enter the following items.

    ・ Conversion Name (required):
    Enter a name to identify the conversion setting in 100 characters or less (counted as 1 character, regardless of full-wide or half-width).
    Enter a conversion name that is easy to identify for tracking purposes and tracking tag setting conditions.
    The same conversion name can not be used in an account.

    ・ Conversion Type (required):
    Select “Web” to track conversions on websites. Select “App” to track app installs (conversions).
    * The input items described below refer to the case where “Web” is selected.

    ・Conversion Tracking Purpose:
    Select the purpose of conversion tracking from the following.
     - Unset: It is available for a new setting. It can be saved as is, but selection of any of the following purposes is recommended.
     - Purchase/sales: Analysis of actions that link to sales such as a product order or sign-up for a service
     - Application: Analysis of the number of signup registration or registered email magazine subscribers
     - Sales promotion: Analysis of the number of documents requests or inquiries about services and products
     - Page access: Analysis of the number of access to specific pages such as important pages
     - Other: All other cases

    ・Tracking Period (required):
    Enter the conversion tracking period (number of days starting the ad click to the conversion) from 7 to 90 days, with half-width numerals.
    Set a tracking period suitable for the products and services being advertised, with reference to the following examples.
     Example 1) Ad for a newly launched ice cream.
     Set 10 days for a purchase made at a convenience store or a supermarket within a short time after seeing the ad.
     Example 2) Ad for new apartment.
     Set 90 days where the customer spends a long time for consideration due to high price and the nature of the product.

    ・Tracking Period (video view):
    Item is displayed only when video ads can be used. Enter the number of days starting the video view to the conversion from 1 to 30 days, with half-width numerals. Default setting is “1.”

    ・Tracking Method:
    Select either “Every” or “One.” When “One” is chosen, the number of unique conversions (excluding multiple conversions from the same user) can be acquired.

    ・Conversion count:
    Select whether conversions to be tracked with this setting are used for Auto bidding (Target CPA).
    Select “Include” to use for Auto Bidding.
    Select “Exclude” not to use for Auto Bidding.
    If “Exclude” is selected, numbers are included in the item of “Total No. of conversions” including a campaign, but not in the item of “No. of conversions.”

    ・Value per Conversion:
    You can enter any value per conversion within 10 half-width numerals. This is optional.
     - Where Value per Conversion is a fixed value:
     If a fixed amount is input, the conversion value can be checked in reports etc.
     - Where the value is different for each conversion:
     Enter any optional amount.
    You can track the conversion value by acquiring the conversion tracking tag, and changing the tag to acquire a different value. Refer to “Advanced settings for conversion tag” for setting.

  5. Click “Create.”
    A conversion tracking tag is created and displayed in the conversion tracking list.
  6. Click “Display tag” for the conversion name set on the site.
  7. Copy the required tag from the tag display screen and paste it on the website.
    Install the tag required for conversion tracking in the HTML source on each page of the website. The tags to be installed are as follows.

    ・Site general tag and Complementary feature tag of conversion analytics
    Install the tag displayed by selecting “Install a site general tag and a complementary feature tag of conversion analytics” on each page of the website.
    Install immediately after the start of the <HEAD> tag in the HTML on all pages. Note that site general tags and conversion analytics complementary feature tags are common within the account.

    ・Conversion tracking tag
    Scroll down the tag display screen and copy the conversion tracking tag. Install the tag on pages with conversion tracking, such as “Order completion page” or “Registration completion page.”

    The install location must be after the location installing the site general tag and conversion analytics complementary feature tag. Also, install within tags, or in a location with conversion action timing.

  8. Save the file in which the conversion tracking tag is pasted and upload to the web server.
  • Once a conversion tracking tag is installed, a 1x1 pixel transparent gif image will appear on the website. Ensure that its use does not impact the website design.
  • To verify that your conversion tracking tag functions properly, click your ad to check a conversion or wait for the actual conversion. Note that it may take some time for conversion data to appear after installing a conversion tracking tag.

<Types of parameters>

The conversion tracking tag contains some parameters.
The values of [yahoo_ydn_conv_io] and [yahoo_ydn_conv_label] are fixed and cannot be changed. Other parameters can be set to any value chosen by the customer. It is not a problem to keep the default setting , but use a new parameters as required.

Value unique to the customer’s account. Must not be changed.

Item that identifies a tag. Must not be changed.
Note that tags automatically migrated from old format YDN tags (supplied prior to September 2014) will be blank.

Where transaction management numbers are issued dynamically, this value can be set to accurately eliminate duplicate counts where the transaction completion page is reloaded (re-read) multiple times. Also, the count will be accurate even if the same user generates multiple valid conversions.
* Even when this value is not set, a reload by the same user within 5 minutes is not counted as a conversion.
To set a value, enter in a range not exceeding 64 bytes, with no leading or trailing spaces.
