Set up website's conversion tracking

Conversion tracking measures the number of valuable actions (purchase, sign up, make a request, etc.) done by users after their ad clicks.

To track conversions on your website, install a conversion tracking tag. Conversions occur when visitors see the page you installed the tag.

You can view tracking data such as the number of conversions in the Campaign Management Tool.

The setting of the conversion tracking tag

The procedure for acquiring the conversion tracking tag and setting it on the transaction completion page (Order completion page, Registration completion page) is as follows.
The conversion tracking tag can be issued up to 1,000 per account.

  1. From the top bar, click "Display Ads." 
  2. From the top, click the tools icon.
  3. Click “Conversion tracking” in the “Common library.” 
  4. Click “+Create conversion setting.”
  5. Enter the following fields:
    Conversion name (required):
    Enter a unique name for this conversion setting up to 100 characters.
    You can't use a duplicate conversion name in an account.
    ・Conversion type (required):
    Select "Web" when tracking conversions on the web. Select "App" when tracking app installation (conversions). This is available on Display Ads (Auction) only.

    *The following description is for fields that appear when you select "Web." To learn about conversion tracking for apps, visit First setting for tracking app install (conversion). This is available on Display Ads (Auction) only.

    ・Tracking purpose:
    Select the purpose of conversion tracking from the following options:
    -None: This is the default setting when displaying the new setting view. You can set it as it is, but we recommend selecting one of the following purposes.
    -Purchase / Sales: Track actions that triggered the purchase. For example, ordering your products and services
    -Sign-up: Track signing up for memberships, mail magazines, etc.
    -Sales promotion: Track document requests, inquiries about your products and services, etc.
    -Browsing main pages: Track the number of views of the specific web page.
    -Other: None of these purposes match.

    ・Conversion window (required):
    Enter the conversion tracking period (number of days starting the ad click to the conversion) from 7 to 90 days, with half-width numerals. Refer to the following examples and set the best period for your product and service to be promoted.
    Example 1) For advertising a new ice candy. Set to 10 days, assuming a case of purchasing at a convenience store or supermarket in a short time after seeing the ad.
    Example 2) For advertising a new apartment. Set to 90 days, due to the high price and long examination period due to the nature of the product.

    ・Conversion window (video):
    Enter the conversion tracking period (number of days starting the video view to the conversion) from 1 to 30 days, with half-width numerals. The default setting is “1.”

    ・Counting options
    Select any of "every" or "one". When selecting "one", you can acquire the number of unique conversions (the number excluding multiple conversions by the same visitor.

    ・Include to conversions
    You can set whether to include the conversions measured by this setting in the “Conversions”.
     “include”: The number of conversions measured with this setting will be counted as “Conversions”. The counted conversions will be used for optimizing auto bidding.
     “exclude”: The numbers of conversions are counted in the “Conversions (all)” but will not be counted in the “Conversions” item. The counted conversions will not be used for optimizing auto bidding.
    When selecting “select conversion settings to be used for optimizing by the campaign” at ”Conversion action for optimization” of the campaign, this setting will not be applied. The conversion setting selected for the campaign or the conversion measured by the conversion group will be counted in “Conversions” and it will be used for optimizing.

    ・Value per conv. (optional):
    You can enter the price of the conversion. Up to 10 digits. This is optional.
     -If the price of the conversion is a fixed value:
     By entering a fixed value, it is possible to verify the conversion value in reports and other areas.
     -If the value varies by conversion:
     Enter any amount.
    It becomes possible to measure various values by changing the tag so that the conversion value can be acquired after acquiring the conversion tag.

  6. Click “Create.”
    A conversion tracking tag is generated and will appear on the list.
  7. Click “View tag” for the conversion name set on the site.
  8. Copy the required tag from the tag display screen and paste it on the website.
    Install the tag required for conversion tracking in the HTML source on each page of the website.
    Install the following tags:

    ・Site general tag and Complementary feature tag of conversion analytics
    Install the tag displayed by selecting “Install a site general tag and a complimentary feature tag of conversion analytics” on each page of the website.
    Install immediately after the start of the <HEAD> tag in the HTML on all pages. Note that site general tags and conversion analytics complementary feature tags are common within the account.

    ・Site general tags and conversion analytics complementary feature tags are common within the account.
    ・To enable complementary feature tags, set the "Auto-tagging" setting to "Set." For more details, see "Complementary feature for conversion analytics."
    ・In Display Ads, if you select a country other than "Japan" when creating an account, you can't use auto-tagging. In this case, you can't complement the conversion tracking.

    ・Conversion tracking tag
    Scroll down the tag display screen and copy the conversion tracking tag. Install the tag on pages with conversion tracking, such as “Order completion page” or “Registration completion page.”

    The install location must be after the location installing the site general tag and conversion analytics complementary feature tag. Also, install within tags, or in a location with conversion action timing.

  9. Save the file in which the conversion tracking tag is pasted and upload to the webserver.
  • "First setting of conversion tracking for the website" is available for users who own "admin" or "edit" access for the account.

  • To verify that your conversion tracking tag functions properly, click your ad to check conversion or wait for the actual conversion. Note that it may take some time for conversion data to appear after installing a conversion tracking tag.
  • The website owner is solely responsible for the behavior and management of the conversion tracking on your website.

<Types of parameters>

The conversion tracking tag contains some parameters.
The values of [yahoo_ydn_conv_io] and [yahoo_ydn_conv_label] are fixed and cannot be changed. Other parameters can be set to any value chosen by the customer. It is not a problem to keep the default setting, but use a new parameter as required.

Value unique to the customer’s account. Must not be changed.

The item that identifies a tag. Must not be changed.
Note that tags automatically migrated from old format YDN tags (supplied prior to September 2014) will be blank.

Where transaction management numbers are issued dynamically, this value can be set to accurately eliminate duplicate counts where the transaction completion page is reloaded (re-read) multiple times. Also, the count will be accurate even if the same user generates multiple valid conversions.
* Even when this value is not set, a reload by the same user within 5 minutes is not counted as a conversion.
To set a value, enter in a range not exceeding 64 bytes, with no leading or trailing spaces.

This is the value per conversion The number input in “Value per conversion” is set during tag setting.
