Placement targeting is a feature to control the destination for ad delivery, by specifying the website targeted for distribution of the ad (or excluded from distribution).

Placement targeting

The steps to set placement targeting in Display Ads (Auction) version of Campaign Editor (hereinafter, Campaign Editor) are as follows.

Placement targeting settings

  1. Create a placement list
    Create a placement list summarizing website URLs to target (or exclude).

  2. Create a campaign and an ad group for placement targeting.
    If you already have a campaign or an ad group for placement targeting, this step is unnecessary.
  3. Set placement targeting for the ad group
    The created placement list is associated to the ad group.
Tips
Placement targeting can also be set up using the following method.

Create a placement list

Steps
  1. Click “Common Library” at the lower left side in the Campaign Editor main window.
  2. Select “Placement List” from the “Lists” on the left-hand side of the Common Library window.
  3. Click “Create placement list” in the operation menu at the top portion of the data area.
  4. The new placement list is added to the lowermost line in the data area.
  5. Set each item in the placement list in the data details area.

    Item nameDescription
    (1) Placement list nameInput the placement list name.
    (2) List typeSelect list type. Learn more about “Placement list type.” 
    (3) UnknownSelect to include or not to include URL that cannot obtain the distribution (unknown) to the placement list.
    (4) DescriptionEnter an explanation of the placement list.
    (4) DetailsSet the list content by clicking “Set/Edit placement list.”

  6. Click “Set/Edit placement list.”
  7. Setting view of placement list will appear. Enter the URL to add to the list.

    Item nameDescription
    (1) Input field of URL to add to the listEnter the URL of the website to target (or exclude), then press the “Add.”
    Tips
    • Enter the URL, excluding “http://” or “https://.”
    • When adding multiple URLs, demarcate using line breaks.
    • The URL candidate list with a record of distribution can be confirmed on the “Add Placement List” in the Campaign Management Tool.
    • You can add URL for each Smartphone Apps. Learn more on ”URL appears on ads for smartphone apps.” 
    (2) List of URLs added to the placement listThe URL added to the placement list is displayed in a list.
    (3) StatusSelect On/Off for each URL added to the placement list.
    On: Applies as the URL to target (or exclude) in line with the placement targeting setting.
    Off: Does not apply as the URL to target (or exclude) regardless of the placement targeting setting.
    (4) RemoveThe selected URL is removed from the list.
  8. Click “OK.”
    The settings of procedure 7 are applied to the data details area.

Set placement targeting for the ad group

Steps
  1. Select “Placement ” from the display content selection list on the left side of the Campaign Editor main window.
  2. Click “Set up placement targeting” on the operation menu at the top of the data area.
  3. Select the placement list to set.

    Tips
    Select the upper level, such as an account or campaign to shift all ad groups under that to being selected.
  4. Click “Add as “Allow”” or “Add as “Exclude”.”
  5. New targeting settings are added to the lowermost line in the data area.
  6. Enter the “Bid adjustment” for the targeting at data details area.
    If you don’t set bid adjustment, leave it as “0”.

  7. Upload the settings to the Campaign Management Tool.
    Complete application to the Campaign Management Tool by uploading the content of the placement targeting set by the Campaign Editor. Learn more about how to upload ”Upload data.” 
Tips
You can also associate the placement list with the ad group from the Common Library window.

  1. Select “Placement List” from the “Lists” on the left-hand side of the Common Library window.
  2. Select “Set to ad group” in the operation menu.
  3. Select the ad group and the placement list to set placement targeting on the “Set up placement list” window, then click “OK.”
  4. Select the placement list to set. Click “Add as “Allow”” or “Add as “Exclude”.”
  5. Click “OK.”
