Geographic Targeting (Deliver ads by specifying a specific area)

When you set the location targeting for specific locations, your ads will be displayed or will not be displayed to the specific location based on the targeting setting. The target area is based on the location of the internet user and information of searched keywords.
You need to enable Location Targeting by campaign level. Following options can set for Location Targeting.

  • There are unavailable locations for targeting.
  • You can control the ad delivery area of all ads under your campaign in "Target area." Please note that this feature is different from the "Target Location" of Ad Customizer which you will need to add each area data. Learn more details on the following help topic about the difference.

How to set location targeting

You can set up specific locations on the campaign level.
In the following screen that appears when creating or editing a campaign, select "Set (Display in Selected Regions Only)" to display the targeting area setting view.
*"Do not set (Display in All Regions)" is set as default, which will deliver ads to all internet users.

In the settings, you can select the areas to exclude from ad delivery and the bid adjustment rate for each area. See the following details.
Geographic Targeting

(1)Select location
When you click "On" for each area, that area will be added to the "Target Area" at the right. When you click "Exclude" for each area, that area will be added to the "Location Exclusions" at the right. You can select multiple areas for On and Exclude.
Area names will show when you click “+” at the left of each area.

(2)Target Area
The area you selected “On” on step (1) will be displayed. To remove the area click “×.”
By setting the bid adjustment rate, you can change the bid for every keyword in a campaign by area.
Click "+0%" (the default setting) for the area you want to set, and select "Increase by" or "Decrease by" on the screen. Enter a number in the "%" field (in 1% unit, half-width characters) and click the "Submit."
The bid adjustment rate can be set within the following range. The adjusted bid is calculated by multiplying the actual keyword bid by the adjustment factor.
 Increase by : 0% - 900%(raise bid between 0% - 900%)
 Decrease by : 1% - 90% (lower bid between 1% - 90%)

(3)Location Exclusions
The area you selected as "Exclude" in (1) will be displayed. To remove the area click “×.”

Note
  • When you have set the Auto Bidding type "Target CPA," "Maximize Clicks" or "Target ROAS," the Bid Adjustment on Day of Week / Hour targeting will be invalid.
  • Contradictions in Geographical Location Settings
    Note that even if a geographical location is set for the display of ads, if it is part of an excluded region, then ads may not be displayed in that location.
    Example
    • [Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture] set for ad display
    • [Aomori Prefecture] set for exclusion from ad display
    Since, in the above example, "Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture" is a part of "Aomori Prefecture", the geographical location set for display is part of an excluded region.
    *If there is a contradiction in "Geo Targeting" settings, an alert will be displayed once settings are complete.
Tips
Copy settings of "Geo Targeting" from an existing campaign
Click the “Options (copy settings of 'Geo Targeting' from an existing campaign)” to display the campaign you want to copy.
Select from Existing Campaigns
Click on the campaign to copy, check the settings displayed on the right side of the screen, and click the "Submit" button to reflect the geo targeting settings.
All campaigns including campaigns with no geo targeting settings will be displayed as copy source.

Advanced location options

Decides the location to deliver ads or not based on where an audience is, and what they searched. If you selected an ad delivery area, select one of the following delivery conditions as the deciding factor.

User’s location, location included in search query, Location of interest

Ads are delivered to internet users of the following categories. This item is selected by default.

  • Internet users who may be located in the designated area
  • Internet users who may have searched with the phrase related to the designated area
  • Internet users who may be interested in the designated area

User Location

The ads will be delivered to internet users who are in the following categories.

  • Only internet users who may be located in the designated area

For example, if "Tokyo" is selected in the geo targeting settings, internet users who may have accessed the site from Tokyo will be included for ad delivery. Ads will not be delivered to internet users located outside of Tokyo even when they have searched with keywords related to "Tokyo."

Location included in search query, Location of interest

The ads will be delivered to internet users who are in the following categories.

  • Internet users who may have searched with the phrase related to the designated area
  • Internet users who may be interested in the designated area
    The users are detected based on the following information.
     -Search keywords that can specify a geographic location
     -Past search history that can specify the user’s interest
     -The user’s past location

For example, if you selected "Tokyo" for geo targeting settings, your ad will be delivered to internet users searching with keywords related to "Tokyo" or who may be interested in Tokyo.

Note
  • The number of impressions may decrease if you set "Location of user" and "Location included in search query, Location of interest." To prevent ad delivery opportunity loss, it is recommended to check the ad delivery status when making settings.
  • The accuracy of targeting is not guaranteed. Selected settings and other factors may cause inaccuracy of this targeting.

Location exclusion options

When you set location exclusion options, select one of the following delivery conditions. The default setting is “Location of user.”

Location of user, Location included in search query, Location of interest

Ads are not delivered to internet users of the following categories.

  • Internet users who may be located in the designated area
  • Internet users who may have searched with the phrase related to the designated area
  • Internet users who may be interested in the designated area

User Location

Ads are not delivered to internet users of the following categories.

  • Internet users who may be located in the designated area

Performance data of Geo Targeting

The statistics by each Geo Targeting setting is also available on the 'Geo Targeting Report'.
