Import data and create audience list for customer data

You can upload your customers' data file and import it to the audience list in Display Ads. We match your imported data with data stored in Yahoo! JAPAN and deliver ads.
Using your imported customer data as an audience list, you can reach more audiences who are interested in your products. Additionally, you can reach an audience that hasn't visited your website.

The customer data you can import is as follows:

  • Ad identifier for App (IDFA or AAID)
  • Email address
You can use both unhashed and hashed email addresses.
When you hash them, use the SHA-256 algorithm. We don't support hashing email addresses.
Unhashed email addresses will be hashed using the SHA-256 algorithm on your PC before reaching our server.

  • Ad delivery using imported custom lists that use hashed email addresses with a salt value became unavailable. Use email addresses hashed without using a salt value or unhashed email addresses.
  • Yahoo! JAPAN Ads API doesn't support importing unhashed email addresses. Hash them before importing through API.
  • When uploading your app's ad identifiers (IDFA, AAID), make sure your customers aren't opted out. If they are opted out at that time, don't upload the ad identifier you got in the past.

File format for uploading

When uploading your data to the audience list, use the following formats:

File format
  • For unhashed email addresses:
    Text file (.txt)
  • For hashed email addresses and ad identifiers for apps (IDFA or AAID):
    -Text file (.txt)
-Compress text file (.txt) using ZIP.
Character codeUTF-8 (without BOM), Shift JIS
*The file can only contain half-width characters and numbers.
Line feed codeLF, CRLF
File sizeUp to 200MB
Number of data
  • Unhashed email address:
    Up to 100,000
*To upload more than 100,000 data, use separate files.
  • Hashed email address and ad identifier for apps (IDFA or AAID):
    No upper limit
    *Don't exceed the file size.

Data samples

Click the following links for each text file to refer to the sample data in text format.
*Note that these text files are samples, don't use them as-is for your case. When you prepare the file to upload, use the values of your stored customer data.

Import data and create an audience list of customer data

See File format for uploading section and create a file.

    1. From the top bar, click "Tools."
    2. From “Common Library,” click "Audience lists."
    3. The audience list appears.
When you don't have a site retargeting tag, click "Audience source" in the side menu. Confirm the "Required for Privacy Policy", check "Agree," and click "Get Site Retargeting tag" to start using one.
Learn more about Acquire Site Retargeting Tag and Tagging on Site.
    4. Click “+Create audience list” and select “Customer data.”
You can import customer data files for audience lists using a "Custom" list, but you can't import files when creating a new one.
    5. Enter the required fields.

      • Audience list name: Enter the audience list name. You can't use the duplicate name.
      • Linked data file: When you click the "Upload," you can see the dialog selecting files.
        (1) Select one of the following options in "Linked data type."
        -Hashed email address
        -Unhashed email address
        (2) Click “Select a file (txt)” and select an upload file (ZIP or TXT format.)
        (3) Confirm the Yahoo! JAPAN Advertising Data Usage Standards (PDF) and click “I comply with Yahoo Japan Advertising Data Usage Standards.”

      • Description(optional): Enter some text for describing the audience list.
    6. Click “Create.”

You can view the file you uploaded in the "Linked data" on the audience lists. Upload status appears when you click the “i” icon next to “Details.”

“Data loaded” appears in the status when the import finishes. Then an audience list is generated.
If you see a “File format error,” check on the file format, etc., and try again.

  • User size is the approximate number of audience and doesn't imply the number of data in the uploaded file.
  • The default audience list doesn't include a user size in the audience list you created.
  • User size may not appear after a few hours after the status becomes "Data loaded."
  • If the number of data you uploaded is small, you may not have enough reach (target audience.)
  • You can't download the imported data.

Valid duration of data connection

You can specify the valid duration of data you connected with the list between 1-60 days.

The following table shows how the valid duration works.

ActionNumber of reaches in the listAd delivery
Sep1, 2018
  • You created an audience list specifying 10 days' valid duration.
  • You connected list data for 3,000 reaches.
  • You associated the audience list with ad groups.

*The valid duration (10 days) ends.

  • The maximum valid duration of data connection is 60 days after connecting the list data. If you continue using the same data after 60 days, import the data again.
The user size of the similar user list becomes zero 28 days after you import customer data. (Similar users count in the base list when it exceeds 100 in the past 28 days.) To avoid this, import again within 28 days when you create a customer-data list to use an audience list based on similar users.
  • Within 60 days after connecting the list data, you can change the valid duration.
However, if changing the valid duration as follows, the ads won't deliver.
October 1: List data connected (50 days of valid duration.)
October 15: Updated the valid duration to 10 days.

Import data to an existing custom list

You can import the additional data to the audience list.

  • Update your data regularly. Your ads will stop if you don't import the additional data within the valid duration you specify. Learn more about Valid duration of data connection
  • You can add different types of data when you import additional data.
Initial upload: IDFA (User A, User B)
Additional upload: AAID (User A, User C)

In this example, the latest audience list includes "User A," "User B," and "User C." However, "User B" is not included in the audience list after the valid duration you specified in the initial upload passed. Because "User B" is not updated in the additional upload.
To make an additional upload, edit your audience list. Learn about Edit or remove audience list.
